Rough World / Rauh Welt - Automotive Heaven

A lot of you seem to enjoy the Rough World (Rauh Welt) 86 pictures I posted up last week, so I decided to find out a little more information about the ties between Rauh Welt and the AE86.
I knew that Rauh Welt actually started out as a small Drift Team in Japan but what I didn't realise was that it was predominately built up with AE86's. A little bit of digging around and I found a great post on the brilliant Motormavens by the one and only Antonio Alvendia who is well known within the AE86 Community as the man behind Cipher Garage "Offset is everything" & "86 Life".
Antonio went into some nice details about the history of Rough World, but also posted some great photos from an Old magazine from 1997 with features of the original team cars.

I was blown away with these 86's. These guys were rocking hard stance and good wheel fitment back in 1997, long before it was made as popular as it is today. One of things that did surprise me is that one of the cars (Seen below) was owned & driven by Kazuhiro Tanaka of Team Orange D1 Fame. Apparently, Tanaka was quite the 86 connoisseur back in the day and lived the 86 life for many years. He certainly knew how to build a good looking 86 anyways.

These cars had serious style. The one below being a personal favorite (apart from the bonnet risers! But i guess that is a sign of the times and how style changes)

Rough World drift team soon moved onto bigger things and started developing their famous image with Porsche 964's & 930's. The team name also saw a change which reflected their new favorite German cars and became "Rauh Welt".

But the guys still stayed true to their roots and still build some incredible 86's today, including this Levin which features a modified Run Free Body kit, mental fitment Watanabe's and a 16v 4AGE with Throttle Bodies.

I love the Rauh Welt Porsche's, but I will always love the original Rough World 86 drift team cars. Probably some of the pioneers of 86 car style which still stand out today, more than 13 years on.
